ENTERING THE SECOND DECADE

Well, we now have a two-digit child. Samuel turned 10! We celebrated his birthday a couple of weeks ago, July 26. Below is his birthday dinner, that he chose: Spice-rubbed, grilled pork chops, apple-walnut salad and fresh green beans with garlic-lemon sauce and bread crumbs. :-)

Cutting his chop with his own knife and being a little goofy.

His gifts.

But...we must open cards first!

Money is always well received. :-) He is building up his savings and is always glad to have something to add.

A neat card from Papa and Grammy...

...with a family tree. As soon as he saw it, he said, "Yes, that's just like something Grammy would get!"

Opening Benny's card. I think he was genuinely moved by the effort Ben made to create something special for him with his limited abilities. Sam gave him such a nice hug.

A wild and fun card from Grandma Betty.

If was full of good things, stickers, money, etc.

Grandma even wrote an acronym for him. We all enjoyed it.

This is a small stack of fun-to-use-outside gifts...

...a forever flashlight (that you pump the handle and never need batteries), a butterfly net and his own rope.

Awww. Can you see the love in his eyes? Grammy got BOOTS!! Boots a happy boy does make.

Beautiful, all-purpose, rubber boots.

Trying them on, of course.

Next gift is...

...a make-a-plate kit. He loves to draw and was interested in the idea of turning one of his drawings into a plate to use.

You can't really tell here, but this is a frame for a poster that he purchased with a gift certificate from Christmas. He received a gift card to the gift shop of the Air Force Museum. He used it to buy a nice poster of a Curtiss P-40 "Warhawk" and had been wanting a frame to put it in.

Look at that smile. He knows what it is.

A model of a Spitfire airplane from his brothers.

A card from William.

Oh, I didn't get a good picture, but I love the spontaneous hugs of gratitude for the cards and gifts.

Showing Will's card to the rest of us.
"Jessy" the poison frog. :-)

And last, Sam got a new bike. New to him anyway. It's bigger and it has gears. Much more suitable than his old bike.

It was almost dark and kind of rainy, but he wanted to try it out of course.

It feels different. It takes some getting used to.
Sam requested ice cream sundaes again for his birthday. We decided to make the ice cream ourselves. While Sam and I were shopping for the ingredients, we saw some really good looking tortes in the bakery at Giant Eagle. We broke down and bought this little chocolate torte to go with our sundaes. It was highly unusual for us, but it felt like the right thing to do. We ended up enjoying it a whole lot.
It was nice to have something to put the candles in for sure!
Happy Birthday, 10 year old!!

Wow, has it really been 10 years since we welcomed Samuel into the world? What a gift we received that glorious day!
